     MANLY JUHAN BREAKER

     J. M. C.'s oldest son is the Rev. Manly Juhan Breaker, a well known Missiouri Baptist.   It has been said he was named after the famous Southern Baptist preacher Basil Manly, a graduate of Furman University.  But he could also have been named for Charles Manly, the second president of the same college.

Our Manly Juhan Breaker was born Greenville, South Carolina in 1850.  He must have had a pleasant life as a "P.K." (preacher's kid), as his father traveled and pastored churches in many different areas.

Manly attended the Wofford college, and later William Jewel college, where he graduated.  He also took a full course in Seminary in Greenville, where he served in both Clear Springs and Standing Springs Churches.

He married Mary Elizabeth Timms, born in 1854 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and died July 15th, 1888 in Clay County, Missouri.

     M. J. Breaker filled several pastorates in Missouri and spent much energy in raising funds for missions.  (He is the originator of the famous "Missouri Plan.")  For his years of service in missions, a memorial was erected to him in Shanghai, China in 1915, by the Missouri Baptist Association, and a building was named Breaker Hall in his honor.

Manly died Oct. 1, 1908 in St. Joseph, Missouri at the age of fifty-eight.

One obituary said the following about him:

"Dr. Breaker was a strong preacher, a vigorous thinker, a man of strong convictions, and of aggressive ideas as to denominational methods and work.  Withal he was a man of gentle, lovable spirit, courteous and cordial manners, a generous heart and an affectionate disposition.  He loved his brethren sincerely, and even when they differed there was the utmost good feeling and kindliness.  He was a gentleman by birth and nature and in his contact and dealings with his brethren the Christian spirit was dominant."
